Believers have a sacred trust, a ministry of reconciliation, that only arrives when we walk in the newness of who Christ called us to be or become. Only as we die to ourselves are we able to receive the newness, purpose, and ultimately unique ministry that Christ has called for each one of us. Similar to the Apostle Paul’s amazing transformation, we all are undergoing a journey of becoming what God has created us to be, but this journey requires true identification with Christ – both in his death and resurrection.

Jesus chose to go through our struggles WITH US – through all the ordinary problems and pain and struggles and suffering that all of us go through that with us – so that we would know that we never run alone.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. - Hebrews 12:1-2

"When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence." Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to continue filling Jesus' table, not with people who look, think, believe and behave just like us. Quite the opposite! When we take our place at Jesus' table, we can expect to be surprised by the people we're sitting next to.

Jesus notices who is missing from his table. He sees the empty chairs that ought to be filled. And He tells his guests to go out and invite them- the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind… and while you’re at it, why not add some women and the Gentiles too. Jesus notices who is NOT at his table. And He wants us to see it too. Because I think Jesus knows- that when we see it- that’s when we’ll do something about it.
