On his final night on earth, Jesus took the time to pray for his followers- for those who were in that room with him that night, those who had been following Him for the last 3 years. And for all those who would follow Him in the years to come. And it's a good thing He did, for Jesus' prayer for us is something we cannot achieve for ourselves. Jesus prayed that we might be protected, that we might be holy, and that we might be one.

In praying Jesus' Kingdom Prayer, we recognize that there is an unseen spiritual battle happening, waging war for our souls. We pray for protection from sin and the evil one as we seek to follow Jesus' faithfulness.

In a world still tainted by sin, we will turn away from and hurt our God; we will turn away from and hurt one another. Jesus' Kingdom Prayer teaches us to seek and offer forgiveness with God and one another.

Jesus teaches us to pray with awareness of our dependency on God for our every need- physical, emotional, relational, spiritual. Everything we could possibly need comes from God's gracious hand. And having received from God's hand, we are freed to share with others with the same generosity and grace with with we have received.

When we pray Jesus' Kingdom Prayer, we find it centers in this petition for God's kingdom to come and God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven. To see this prayer fulfilled is to see ALL prayer fulfilled.
